Back Up Your iPhone before Updating to iOS 18.2

As iOS 18.2 release approaches with new Apple Intelligence features for iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Pro, it's crucial to back up your phone. This isn't just about regular iCloud backups but creating an archive for extra security in case something goes wrong with the update. Ensuring this backup will give you peace of mind as you install iOS 18.2, which offers new features like Genmoji and Visual Intelligence, along with enhancements from iOS 18.1 such as improved text messaging, better Apple Maps, and iPhone mirroring on MacOS Sequoia.

Creating an archive backup on your computer before installing a new version of iOS is essential. While iCloud Backup is convenient for regular data backups, it only keeps the most recent backup, which can’t be used to revert to an older iOS version. Therefore, an archive backup ensures you have a reliable fallback option if you encounter issues with the new iOS update. This step is especially crucial when moving to a major release like iOS 18 or when installing iOS betas.

Before creating an archived backup, consider whether to encrypt it for added security. Encrypting scrambles the data, protecting it from unauthorized access, and preserves sensitive information like passwords and personal data in Health and Fitness apps. However, it requires a separate password, which, if forgotten, renders the backup useless. Therefore, it's crucial to store the password securely. When creating an iOS 17 backup as a fallback for iOS 18 beta, weigh the trade-offs of this added security measure.

Creating a Local iPhone Archive on Your Mac

Making this backup requires some disk space and a bit of patience:

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac.

2. Open a new Finder window (choose File > New Finder Window, or press Command-N).

3. In the sidebar on the left, select your iPhone under Locations.

4. If you wish to encrypt the data, tick the Encrypt local backup checkbox and set a password.

5. In the General tab, click on Back Up Now.

6. Click on Manage Backups.

7. Right-click (or Control-click) the backup you made and choose Archive.

Creating a Local iPhone Archive on Windows

To create a local archive backup on a Windows computer, follow these steps using the iTunes app:

1. Connect your iPhone to your Windows computer.

2. Open iTunes and click the iPhone button at the top left.

3. Click on Summary.

4. If you want to encrypt the data, check the Encrypt local backup option and set a password.

5. Click Back Up Now.

6. Click Manage Backups.

7. Right-click the backup you made and select Archive. This ensures the backup is not overwritten by the next local backup or automatically deleted if the

computer runs low on space.
